<image:caption>Deflection. First Ascent. - Here are some of the things that made it possible. • Financial security • Housing security • Access to a car • Access to free healthcare • Climbing gear sponsorship • Access to the internet • Safe access to the area • Being able-bodied • Being able to recreate on stolen land • Representation and inclusion within the global and Australian climbing community - These things have enabled every single climbing trip and and project I’ve ever done. - First ascentionists are people who were in the right place at the right time thanks to their circumstances. - It takes a lot of time, effort and resources to find and bolt climbs, build tracks and landings, and clean up lines. - BUT - You have to have a surplus of free time, effort and resources in the first place. - There are a lot more things than those listed above which enable me to climb on a regular basis. If you’ve read this far and can think of any I’ve missed or would just like people to be aware of please feel free to write it below.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Hey Australian/Global climbing community. While you’re busy valuing cishet white male voices (like mine) more than others, have a read! . The call went out recently to change a specific list of disgustingly offensive names at Nowra (Dr @teagaziii) and elsewhere in Australia (@campbell_harrison547). . The “discussions” that followed these posts prove how exclusive our community is. Multiple people from diverse backgrounds spoke up about how these names have contributed to their discomfort within this sport and they were shouted down by (mainly) white men again and again. . We had some big names in the community come out to defend their friends, tone police, and tell the people offended that they shouldn’t be on Facebook. . Respectful and calm discourse is the privilege of those not affected by the issue at hand. . If you’re more upset that someone is calling out racism/sexism/homophobia/glorification of rape and domestic violence, than the fact that these exist within our “inclusive” sport in the first place, please ask yourself why that is. . Stop defending “tradition” as if it matters more than the right for someone to feel safe in our community. . I am one of the most privileged climbers around. I have been silent, I have been complicit, i have been slow to act and I am sorry. . We have to be better than we were. . We are not an inclusive community yet. Just acknowledge it.</image:caption>
